Listening Together at DEF CON 34 (how audio will work this year)

New for DEF CON 34: listening to talks via headphones! We hope that this will significantly improve audio quality for everyone who wants to attend talks at DEF CON.

We’re using two different solutions: Quiet Events and Listen WIFI.

Quiet Events

Quiet Events may also be known as “Silent Disco”. This system is available at all main stages and creator stages, and also at many village and community locations throughout the first-floor exhibition halls.

Here’s how it works:

There will be a headset placed on each chair in the audience. If you want to join the audience, put on the headset and sit on that chair. When you get up to leave, put the headset back on that chair. Headsets are programmed & will not work in other areas – leave them here. Please don’t remove them from their assigned area.

Cleaning wipes and ear cup covers are available at entrances to main stages and headphone help tables. Please consider reducing waste, and reuse your ear cup covers.

Troubleshooting: Turn the wheel +/- on the ear cup to adjust the volume. Headsets have LEDs on them; yours should be displaying the same LED color as those around you — the color indicates the audio channel that the headset is tuned to. If they are showing the wrong LED color, or you otherwise need assistance, look for nearby help tables.

Tech Details

This solution broadcasts using radio transmitters near each stage, and the headphones have pre-programmed frequencies (channels), based on where each headphone is assigned.

Listen WIFI

Listen WIFI is a streaming audio solution, where attendees are able to listen to audio using their own smartphones. This system is available only at Main Stages 1 – 5.

Here’s how it works:

  • Install Hacker Tracker. This is the official app of DEF CON.
  • Install Listen WIFI. This is the app that will let you listen to the audio stream.
  • Connect to the DEF CON Secure Wi-Fi.
  • Launch the Listen WIFI app once.
  • Open Hacker Tracker. Make sure that you’re looking at the DEF CON 34 conference. Navigate to readme.nfo -> Audio Info. Scroll down to the Listen WIFI audio channel list. Tap on the channel that you wish to listen to. Listen WIFI will launch, and connect to the desired audio stream.

There is some concern about whether Bluetooth will be functional in the main stage areas, due to the number of individuals attempting to use Bluetooth audio simultaneously. We recommend using wired headphones or earbuds if you have them available.
