DESCRIPTION: 'Title: Sold Out - Hands-on IoT firmware extraction and flas
 h\n forensics\n Tags: DEF CON Workshop | DEF CON Workshops\n When: F
 riday\, Aug 7\, 09:00 - 12:59 PDT\n Where: LVCCW Level 2 W225 (Workshops
) - [1]Map\n\n Description:\n\n Did you ever wanted to hack an IoT dev
ice but did not know how to\n start? Having UART is nice\, but does not
help in many cases.\n\n For a complete analysis of an IoT device\, it is
required to look at\n the firmware itself. In most cases this means tha
t the firmware\, data\n or encryption keys need to be extracted from the
device memory. Many\n researchers are hesitant to do that as there is a
high risk of\n destroying the device or leaving it in an inoperable sta
te. In this\n workshop we will look at different flash memory types (EEP
ROM\, SPI\n flash\, NAND flash\, eMMC flash) and how to extract the info
rmation from\n them.\n\n We will show that you do not need very expens
ive hardware to archive\n your goal and that it is not as complicated as
everyone believes. See\n which tools might be useful for your own lab!\
n\n Participants will have the opportunity to work in groups and being\n
provided different kinds of IoT devices (e.g. smart speakers). After a\
 n tear-down\, you can use different chip-off methods (e.g. Hot air\, IR\
n soldering) to remove the flash chip and read it out. Optionally\, the\
n tools re-ball and re-solder the IC will be available after the\n wor
kshop. In the end\, each team should have the data and a functional\n de
vice again.\n\n Bonus: If you brick the device\, you can keep the parts
 as a souvenir\n or can wear them as badges.\n\n Speakers:Dennis Giese\

\n\n Dennis Giese is a researcher with the focus on the security and\n
privacy of IoT devices. While being interested in physical security\n a
nd lockpicking\, he enjoys applied research and reverse engineering\n ma
lware and all kinds of devices. His most known projects are the\n docume
ntation and hacking of various vacuum robots. He calls himself a\n "robo
t collector" and his current vacuum robot army consists of over\n 95 dif
ferent models from various vendors. He talked about his research\n at th
 e Chaos Communication Congress\, REcon\, HITCON\, NULLCON\, and\n DEFCON
.\n\n SpeakerBio: Braelynn Luedtke\n\n Hacker and tomato farmer. Enjo
ys researching the security of anything\n that piques her curiosity. She
has previously presented this research\n at conferences such as Chaos C
 ommunication Congress\, HITCON and\n DEFCON.\n\n SpeakerBio: Arnold W
ey\n\n Arnold Wey is an electronics security researcher. His recent work
\n includes security testing of virtual GPU implementations\, robot arm\
 n communication protocols\, and repurposing a 3D printer for fault\n i
njection research.\n\n SpeakerBio: Harsha Potu\n\n Harsha has been ta
king things apart since he could get his hands on a\n screwdriver for fu
n and profit. Nowadays he is a cybersecurity\n researcher with a decade
of experience in embedded security. He loves\n to reverse boards + firmw
are and regularly finds vulnerabilities at\n various layers of execution
. Especially interested in breaking secure\n boot chain designs!\n\n L
