Presentation Proposal Title: A Droidwork Orange: A\n Longitudinal Study
of Android Security Research Samuele Doria\n (University of Padua)\, Nic
holas Miazzo (University of Padova)\, Tiziano\n Labruna (Fondazione Brun
o Kessler)\, Eleonora Losiouk (University of\n Padua) Abstract Android h
as been the dominant mobile platform for over\n a decade\, but we still
lack an understanding of how Android security\n research has evolved\, w
hich problems have received sustained\n attention\, and whether the rece
nt drop in publication volume reflects\n exhaustion or maturity. This pa
per presents the first comprehensive\n longitudinal study of the Android
security research ecosystem. We\n built Ludovico\, a curated corpus of
11\,691 Android security papers\n published between 2008 and 2025\, comp
lemented by 464 iOS papers and a\n survey of 86 active researchers. By c
ombining iterative topic modeling\n with manual validation\, analysis of
authors’ affiliations and\n publication venues\, and extraction of ta
rgeted Android versions\, we\n studied the evolution of topics\, contrib
utors\, publication venues\, and\n the interplay between platform change
s and research priorities. Our\n results show that the field grew rapidl
 y until a 2016-2018 peak and\n then contracted\, but not because Android
security is considered\n solved: the ecosystem has matured\, and advanc
ing the state of the art\n requires specialized\, low-level expertise. W
e observe a structural\n transition from App Privacy & Security to Malwa
re Detection\, which has\n dominated the literature since 2017. This is
also motivated by the\n adoption of AI-based techniques: 57.4% of papers
  focusing on malware\n Speakers:Nicholas Miazzo\,Eleonora Losiouk\n\n
SpeakerBio: Nicholas Miazzo\, University of Padova\n\n yearly output. W
e further find that iOS research is more focused on\n digital forensics\
, revealing how platform openness shapes research\n trajectories. Finall
y\, 73.26% of surveyed researchers confirm a\n real-world impact of Andr
oid security research\, while highlighting\n platform hardening\, limite
d access to updated datasets\, and funding\n constraints as the main bar
riers ahead. Brief Biography Nicholas\n Miazzo is a Ph.D. student in com
puter science at the University of\n Padua\, where he completed his mast
er's degree in 2024. His research\n now focuses on Android security\, pa
rticularly leveraging Large\n Language Model agents to analyze decompile
d Android applications and\n perform taint analysis to automatically det
ect potential data leakage.\n He is also a co-author of VirtualPatch [1]

s independently of device\n vendors. He is currently contributing to its
