 omes to smart cars\, and now we drive down streets with\n   smart cameras 
 tracking our every move. And why aren’t even aware of\n   most of it\, b
 ecause almost none of it is disclosed in any meaningful\n   way to the peo
 ple being surveilled. Sometimes because companies\n   don’t want their u
 sers to understand what data they’re collecting\,\n   because users woul
 d be upset\, and sometimes because governments doing\n   want us to know a
 bout the surveillance. This talk walks through a\n   series of real cases 
 where surveillance was hiding in plain sight\n   inside ordinary consumer 
 iot devices and apps\, and was only discovered\n   because someone with th
 e right skills bothered to look. From high\n   school students at a previo
 us DEF CON uncovering microphones installed\n   in school bathrooms\, to B
 yron Tau's reporting on commercial SDKs (like\n   the one embedded in a wi
 dely-used Muslim prayer app) feeding location\n   data to U.S. military an
 d intelligence buyers\, to robot vacuums\n   quietly mapping the interiors
  of homes and shipping that data\n   overseas\, to the BadBox 2.0 botnet f
 ound lurking inside off-the-shelf\n   Android streaming boxes like Superbo
 x. The surveillance is pervasive\,\n   and the average consumer has no rea
 listic way to detect or refuse it.\n   This session makes the case that th
 e question is no longer "are you\n   being watched?" but "could you even o
 pt out if you tried?" The reality\n   is\, it’s becoming so difficult to
  have meaningful privacy in the\n   digital age that we’re on the cusp o
 f a digital panopticon that\n   threatens the very freedom of society. Thi
 s talk explains what is at\n   stake to democracy when privacy disappears\
 , and how it slowly\n   eliminates the self-correcting mechanisms and chec
 ks on power in\n   society\, such as protest movements\, whistleblowers\, 
 independent media\,\n   protest movements\, activist groups\, and oppositi
 on parties. It is also\n   a call to action for the people in this room\, 
 who possess the unique\n   skill sets of reverse engineering\, network ana
 lysis\, firmware\n   teardown\, RF work etc. People breaking these systems
  apart and\n   revealing what they find to the world is rapidly becoming t
 he only\n   meaningful check on a landscape that has decided surveillance 
 is the\n   default. We need more researchers looking\, and we need them lo
