 DEAD COW…\n   As pirated copies of speedmetal and punk music play in the
  background\,\n   these erstwhile revolutionaries speak of their disillusi
 on with The\n   Way Things Are\, and their obsession with their new comput
 ers. All over\n   America\, teens were waking to not just the typical diss
 atisfaction of\n   adolescence\, but the awareness that via these new mode
 s of\n   communication and interaction\, they could meet like-minded other
 s\,\n   have some illicit fun\, and maybe\, just maybe\, change the goddam
 n\n   world.\n\n   1984 wasn’t the beginning of hacking\, but brought pe
 rhaps the first\n   real blossoming of the culture. The spread of the pers
 onal computer\,\n   and the modem\, brought the birth of not just cDc\, bu
 t the Legion of\n   Doom\, and 2600 Magazine. 1985 would bring Phrack Maga
 zine\, and a true\n   explosion in the written culture\, with t-files beco
