 Commercial solutions exist\, however these all require monthly\n   subscri
 ptions and cell coverage in order to work. We are hackers! We\n   can do b
 etter.\n\n   Using the Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS)\, a digita
 l\n   communications standard that utilizes the 2 meter amateur radio band
 \,\n   I've built a monitoring platform that can alert on high or low\n   
 temperatures even when cell service isn't available. By broadcasting a\n  
  signal that can be picked up with commercial hand-held radios\,\n   backc
 ountry monitoring is possible\, and when inside coverage areas\, an\n   AW
 S Lambda\, combined with the APRS.FI service enables real-time alerts\n   
 through SMS messages.\n\n   In this talk\, we'll go through the journey of
  building this\n   off-the-grid temperature monitoring system\, including 
 evaluation of\n   off-the-shelf tools commonly used for high-altitude ball
 ooning\,\n   discussion of online APIs related to APRS and their limitatio
 ns\, and\n   the risk modelling process related to a system designed for l
 ife\n   safety. Attendees will be able to use this knowledge to build thei
 r\n   own monitoring systems for use in vehicles\, high-altitude balloons\
