DESCRIPTION: 'Title: Hacking the Vote: How Hackers Caused the Downfall of
  the Dutch\n Voting Machines\n When: Friday\, Aug 9\, 17:00 - 17:45 PD
 T\n Where: LVCC West/Floor 2/W223-W224 - [1]Map\n\n Description:\n\n
It’s 2007 when the Dutch Ministry of Internal Affairs orders a ban\n
on voting machines. Voting machines that have been in use for over a\n d
ecade by then. The reason? The Dutch Secret Service has declared the\n T
EMPEST radiation emitted by the voting machines makes it possible for\n
someone outside the polling station to see what someone is voting. But\n
that is just the tip of the voting machine-ice berg. What came before\n
is two years of a foundation started by a group off Dutch hackers that\n
fought to prove that voting machines in their current form are\n unrel
iable\, cannot be checked and can be manipulated to show any\n result yo
u want\, regardless of the votes that are given as input. What\n followe
d is a lengthy report of a government ordered commission that\n describe
s 8 principles of trustworthy elections. These principles are\n very dif
ficult to adhere to using voting machines\, even modern voting\n machine
 s. The reason for this are some fundamental issues that come\n with comp
uters: a lack of transparency for those without a technical\n background
as well as the issue of voting secrecy (nobody being able\n to tell wha
t a specific person voted for). In this presentation\; I\n outline the h
istory of the Dutch voting machines and their demise\,\n what a group of
hackers had to do with this\, as well as the\n fundamental issues that
we still struggle with to this day. Listeners\n can take this informatio
n as lessons for their own election processes.\n Mind you\, we are not s
aying not to use voting machines. We are not\n against the idea of votin
g machines. However\, the issues we as the\n Netherlands are struggling
with have still not been resolved to this\n very day.\n\n SpeakerBio:
