DESCRIPTION: 'Title: Analyzing the Security of Satellite-Based Air Traffi
 c Control\n When: Friday\, Aug 9\, 16:00 - 16:30 PDT\n Where: LVCC Wes
 t/Floor 1/Hall 4/Creator Stage 3 - [1]Map\n\n Description:\n\n Automat
ic Dependent Surveillance – Contract (ADS-C) is a\n satellite-based av
iation datalink application used to monitor aircraft\n in remote regions
. It is a crucial method for air traffic control to\n track aircraft whe
re other protocols such as ADS-B lack connectivity.\n Even though it has
been conceived more than 30 years ago\, and other\n legacy communicatio
n protocols in aviation have shown to be\n vulnerable\, ADS-C’s securi
ty has not been investigated so far in the\n literature. We conduct a fi
rst investigation to close this gap. First\,\n we compile a comprehensiv
 e overview of the history\, impact\, and\n technical details of ADS-C an
d its lower layers. Second\, we build two\n software-defined radio recei
vers in order to analyze over 120’000\n real-world ADS-C messages. We
further illustrate ADS-C’s lack of\n authentication by implementing an
ADS-C transmitter\, which is capable\n of generating and sending arbitr
ary ADS-C messages. Finally\, we use\n the channel control offered throu
 gh a software-defined ADS-C receiver\n and transmitter as a basis for an
in-depth analysis of the protocol\n weaknesses of the ADS-C system. The
found vulnerabilities range from\n passively tracking aircraft to activ
ely altering the position of\n actual aircraft through attacks on the do
wnlink and the uplink. We\n assess the difficulty and impact of these at
tacks and discuss\n potential countermeasures.\n\n We will further loo
k at satellite-based ADS-B receivers and discuss\n their security and ho
w they relate to ADS-C.\n\n SpeakerBio: Martin Strohmeier\, Senior Scie
ntist at Cyber Defence\n Campus\n\n Martin Strohmeier is a Senior Scie
ntist at the Swiss Cyber Defence\n Campus\, where he is responsible for
vulnerability research programmes\n into aircraft\, satellites and cars.
His work was published in all\n major systems security conferences\, to
talling more than 100\n publications to date. He has also spoken previou
sly at the DEFCON\n Aerospace Village and co-organized CTFs there.\n\n
