DESCRIPTION: 'Title: The Risk and Reward of Distributed Industrial Contro
 l\n When: Friday\, Aug 9\, 14:00 - 14:30 PDT\n Where: LVCC West/Floor
 1/Hall 3/Creator Stage 2 - [1]Map\n\n Description:\n\n Economic effici
ency and increasing automation mean that many\n industrial assets are re
motely monitored and controlled. While some\n assets\, such as oil produ
ction platforms\, remain manned in isolated\n conditions\, the ecosystem
of renewable energy and distributed energy\n resources (DERs)\, pipelin
es\, and other assets are increasingly\n unmanned with control extending
over common information links. While\n this has been a boon for cost\,
it has also resulted in a radical\n extension of attack surface for cybe
r operations.\n\n In this discussion\, we will explore the nature of dis
tributed\n industrial asset operation and the opportunities this present
s for\n adversaries to infiltrate and potentially disrupt critical\n i
nfrastructure operations. To make this point\, we will review examples\n
of adversary activity\, from the 2022 ViaSat incident through\n histori
cal pipeline intrusions (NOT Colonial!)\, showing how\n adversaries inte
ntionally or inadvertently prey on brittle\n communication links for ind
ustrial disruption. We will conclude with a\n discussion of how these ri
sks can be mitigated in a way that is\n sensible and economical\, becaus
e wind farm operators won't lay their\n own dedicated fiber anytime soon
