DESCRIPTION: 'Title: Play by Play of the Curling v. Raffensperger Lawsuit
 \n When: Friday\, Aug 9\, 10:45 - 11:45 PDT\n Where: LVCC West/Floor 2
 /W223-W224 - [1]Map\n\n Description:\n\n For three weeks in January 20
24\, a federal judge heard arguments that\n Ballot Marking Devices (BMDs
) as they are uniformly used in Georgia\n burden the right to vote to th
e extent that their continued use is\n unconstitutional.  In 2019\, the
same court banned the use of Direct\n Recording Equipment (DRE) on the
same grounds. Banning BMDs would have\n national repercussions. The case
was litigated in a bench trial\, a\n lawsuit not tried in front of a ju
ry.\n\n Using actual court presentations and documents\, the proposed pa
nel\n will summarize the arguments made by attorneys and experts for the
\n Plaintiffs (a coalition of cybersecurity and voting systems experts\n
and voting rights activists) and the Defendant (Georgia Secretary of\n
State Raffmsperger). Panelists include representatives of the\n plaint
 iffs\, defendants\, and independent experts\, moderated by a\n distingui
shed legal journalist. Observers will explain the\n extraordinary coinci
dences surrounding this lawsuit\, including the\n events of January 6th\
, the Trump allies’ successful efforts to steal\n the state’s softwa
re\,  and the attempt by backers of then-President\n Donald Trump and t
he attempt to brand Plaintiffs as election deniers.\n Panelists will als
o recreate technical demonstrations used in court.\n\n The panel will us
e a novel “steelman” analysis of the Defense’s\n arguments. Unlike
strawman analysis\, a steelman (often called\n charitable analysis) arg
ument crafts the most favorable interpretation\n of the responses to the
Plaintiff's complaint\, strengthening and in\n some cases correcting er
 rors.\n\n Speakers:Susan Greenhalgh\,Mary Kaiser\,Drew Springall\,Philip
