combat veteran of the\n war in Afghanistan\, and has served at embassies

rector (ONCD)\n Michaela Lee is the Director for Strategy and Research a
t the Office\n of the National Cyber Director. Prior to her present role
\, Michaela\n worked at the intersection of geopolitical risk and cybers
ecurity at\n the Krebs Stamos Group. Her background is in emerging techn
ologies and\n human rights\, having covered issues of artificial intelli
gence\,\n privacy\, and platform governance at nonprofit BSR (Business f
or Social\n Responsibility). She is a graduate of the University of Cali
fornia\,\n Davis and the Harvard Kennedy School.\n\n Description:\n
Authoritarian regimes abuse technology as a tool to suppress critics\,\n
  journalists\, human rights defenders\, and more. Often\, they exploit\n
security weaknesses in common Internet technologies in their attempts\n
to censor information and communication and curtail freedom of\n expres
sion. ONCD and the State Department will talk about how\n authoritarian
regimes censor their populations\, U.S. Government\n efforts to increase
security while combatting authoritarian censorship\n and repression\, a
nd how to help.\n\n The lack of security and resilience throughout the n
etwork stack\n creates opportunities for authoritarian regimes to repres
s or censor\n at scale. We will talk through how regimes have historical
ly taken\n advantage of protocols\, internet infrastructure\, and lack o
f\n encryption to do just that. We’ll then talk about how the U.S.\n
Government is approaching this problem.\n\n But most technology\, devel
opment\, and internet services are in the\n private sector\, not the gov
ernment. So we'll talk about how the\n community can help: from protocol
s that need more research and\n testing\, to implementing known security
practices\, attendees will\n learn how they can contribute to Internet
 freedom!\n\n '\n\n 1. #CaesarsSummitBR\n\n\n
