DESCRIPTION: 'Title: Be a Nerd that Talks Good: Up-leveling how we talk a
bout\n misinformation\, to build community trust and awareness\n When:
  Friday\, Aug 11\, 14:30 - 15:30 PDT\n Where: Caesars Forum - Summit - 2
 24 - Misinfo Village - [1]Map\n\n SpeakerBio:Joel Benge \, MessageSpec C
onsulting\n Joel Benge is the principal at MessageSpec Consulting. He su
pports\n founders and product teams at startups and scale-ups in creatin
 g\n technically-accurate and textually-beautiful stories and messages. H
e\n works closely with clients to connect their business objectives to t
he\n human emotions and motivations of their target audiences — creati
ng\n content that gets attention\, gets remembered\, and gets results. W
 ith\n over 25 years in IT\, cybersecurity\, and marketing\, Joel has wor
ked for\n companies from NASA to Nickelodeon\, along with several other\
n organizations that start with different letters than N. He is a\n pr
oponent of the series comma and (poorly) plays the didgeridoo.\n\n Descr
iption:\n Sure\, you’ve got skills to “build the stuff and do the th
ing.”\n But how good are you at talking to non-techs\, execs\, and the
general\n public about why what you’re doing is important? If you can
’t get\n people’s attention\, get them to remember the important thi
ngs\, and\n motivate them to act (or not act\, in the case of misinforma
 tion)\, you\n can’t be as effective.\n\n This workshop explores a fr
amework for a better understanding of how\n we as technologists can deve
lop messages that get attention\, get\n noticed\, and get results withou
t “dumbing down” or sacrificing\n technical acuity. Basically\, bein
g the Nerds that Talk Good.\n\n The solution to misinformation\, especia
lly machine-generated\n misinformation\, is not solely a bot vs. bot pro
blem. Understanding why\n messages take hold in the first place and leve
raging our human heart\,\n mind\, and gut-level responses to stories can
make us better\n communicators as technologists—which can help authen
tic and\n trustworthy content rise above the machines.\n\n Leveraging
 the MessageDeck—a novel\, nontechnical\, hands-on\n card-based approac
h—\, participants will be coached to discover the\n higher-order motiv
ations and objectives necessary for their\n communications and content t
o be trusted and believed. The model also\n serves as a framework to dev
elop an informed\, skeptical awareness when\n receiving information.\n\n
The model was developed after 25 years in arts and entertainment\,\n
hardcore IT and cybersecurity\, and government communications and is\n b
eing presented with none of that boring nonsense. We’ll get\n together
\, play some cards\, spark some conversations\, and out of it\n will com
e a messaging platform that will recapture the public sphere\n for good.
\n\n Participants will also have an opportunity to contribute to a\n M
isinformation Village Messaging Platform—a set of hallmark messages\n
that can be adopted by the broader community. By discovering these\n aut
hentic messages\, we build cohesion and consistency across the\n misinfo
rmation awareness movement.\n\n Samples of the MessageDeck will be avail
able as supplies last to any\n who want them\, but the strength of the a
pproach lies in its\n flexibility to be used explicitly or to inform oth
er facilitated\n conversations. So we will also have an opportunity to e
xplore other\n ways to apply it to the work of others.\n\n '\n\n 1.
