DESCRIPTION: 'Title: Warshopping - further dalliances in phreaking smart
shopping\n cart wheels\, RF sniffing and hardware reverse engineering\n
   When: Friday\, Aug 11\, 11:00 - 11:45 PDT\n Where: Harrah's - Nevada B
allroom - Lake Tahoe & Reno - War Stories -\n On the Record - [1]Map\n\n
SpeakerBio:Joseph Gabay \, Hacker\n Joseph is a robotics engineer tur
ned hacker - inspired by curiosity of\n the small systems in our everyda
y world\, he went from developing\n products to performing security asse
ssments of them. He specializes in\n embedded systems\, circuit reverse
engineering\, and mechatronics.\n\n His other hobbies include skydiving\
 , multi-medium fabrication\, and\n collecting strange domain names. He i
s also the founder and Chief\n Lunatic of the Flat Moon Society\, who wo
uld like to ask you: isn’t\n it weird we never see the other side of t
 he moon?\n\n Twitter: [2]@stoppingcart\n\n Description:\n Smart shop
ping cart wheels are electronic wheels with a mechanical\n braking mecha
nism meant to prevent cart removal or shoplifting\, as\n well as electro
nics to provide other tracking functions. In a past\n talk\, I’ve disc
ussed the ultra-low-frequency communication these\n systems use and how
to sniff and replay them (and even use your\n phone’s speaker to “ph
reak” your shopping cart!\n\n This talk explores a new type of smart w
heel (the Rocateq system)\, and\n focuses on a deeper exploration of the
hardware and firmware. On top\n of capturing new sets of ultra-low-freq
uency control signals\, we’ll\n look at the 2.4 GHz “checkout” sig
nal that it receives from the\n register and reverse engineer the PCB -
soldering on “fly-wires”\n to look at the chip-to-chip communication
with a logic analyzer.\n We’ll also use a PICKIT programmer to dump t
he firmware from the\n main microcontroller for basic analysis using Ghi
dra.\n\n In addition to the talk\, the website where you can play the co
ntrol\n signals as audio files on your phone will be updated to include
the\n control codes for the Rocateq brand wheels.\n\n REFERENCES:\n\n
