 11\, 10:00 - 10:45 PDT\n Where: Harrah's - Nevada Ballroom - Lake Tahoe

livan\n Joe Sullivan is the CEO of Ukraine Friends\, a nonprofit providi
ng\n humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine. He also advises a number
of\n startups and mentors security leaders. Joe has worked at the\n i
 ntersection of government\, technology\, and security since the\n mid-19
90s. He spent 8 years working for the US DOJ\, eventually as a\n federal
  prosecutor 100% focused on technology-related crimes\, received\n natio
nal recognition from the DOJ for outstanding service as a federal\n pros
ecutor\, and worked on many first-of-their-kind cybercrime cases\,\n inc
luding supporting the digital aspects of the 9/11 investigation.\n Joe w
as recruited to eBay in 2002 to build out their eCrime team\, and\n late
r took on responsibilities at PayPal. In 2008 Joe moved to\n Facebook wh
ere he became their CSO\, building a small security org into\n a team of
hundreds. He was recruited from there to join Uber in 2015\n to be thei
r first CSO. After Uber\, Joe spent 2018 through 2022 as the\n CSO at Cl
oudflare. He has also advised a significant number of\n companies over t
he years\, including AirBnB and DoorDash. Joe has\n testified as an expe
rt before the US Congress twice\, been a\n commissioner on the National
Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention\, a\n board member on the Nationa
l Cyber Security Alliance\, a many-time\n opening plenary speaker at the
Dallas Crimes Against Children\n Conference\, a participant in a White
House anti-online-bullying\n effort\, an advisor to the Department of Ho
meland Security\, and in 2016\n accepted an appointment from President O
bama to his Commission on\n Enhancing National Cybersecurity.\n\n Desc
ription:\n The federal criminal case of United States v. Joseph Sullivan
\, NDCA\n 3-20-CR-337 WHO\, has been covered and debated quite publicly
since I\n was fired by the new Uber CEO in November 2017\, a year after
the\n incident. Most discussion has focused on questions of my guilt or\
n innocence\, the culpability of other executives at the company\, and t
he\n implications of the case for other security executives.\n\n Less
has been written about the guilt or innocence of those who\n accessed Ub
er’s AWS environment in October 2016 and triggered an\n incident respo
nse by emailing me and asking for payment. After we met\n them\, my team
and I did not consider those 19- and 20-year-old kids to\n be criminal
actors and treated them as security researchers. Yet both\n also faced f
ederal criminal charges.\n\n During my talk I will review the extraordin
ary investigation done by\n my team at Uber and put it into the context
of other historical cases\n we and I had worked on. Whether or not you c
onsider them to be\n security researchers\, there are many lessons to be
learned related to\n the dynamics between researchers and companies and
  the dynamics\n between companies and the government.\n\n '\n\n 1. #
