cCain\n\n Description:\n The hacker community has long conducted impor
tant security research\n that skates the edge of legality. This has led
to charges and\n lawsuits\, bogus and serious alike\, against hackers. I
 n this panel\,\n we’ll hear from a hacker that faced legal challenges\
, we’ll\n describe what legal counseling for hackers looks like in pra
 ctice\, and\n we’ll discuss a new resource for the hacker community: t
he Security\n Research Legal Defense Fund.\n\n Legal issues can arise
for good faith hackers because computer or\n software owners want to pre
vent security research or vulnerability\n disclosure. Security researche
rs have rights and defenses against\n legal claims\, but don’t always
have access to representation or\n resources to defend themselves. EFF p
rovides free legal counseling\,\n ideally in advance of security researc
hers conducting their work so\n they can steer clear of problematic acti
vity or at least mitigate the\n risk of legal threats. In litigation\, E
FF tries to find cases that\n will advance legal rights for the entire c
ommunity\, but many\n individuals will need representation even when the
ir particular cases\n will not have a broader impact. In those cases\, E
FF endeavors to refer\n people to cooperating counsel\, which can be dif
ficult if funds are not\n available.\n\n What is it like\, as a hacker
\, to face legal threats? What are the\n common ways hackers encounter l
egal threats? When that happens\, what\n should hackers do? What is it r
eally like to provide legal\n representation to hackers? Are there areas
of the world with greater\n or lesser access to legal rights and repres
entation? What resources\n can hackers leverage to protect themselves\,
their rights\, and others\n in the community? Join us and find out!\n\n
