DESCRIPTION: 'Title: Private Until Presumed Guilty\n When: Friday\, Aug
  11\, 13:30 - 14:15 PDT\n Where: Caesars Forum - Academy - 407-410 - Tra
 ck 4 - [1]Map\n Speakers:Allison Young\,Diane Akerman\n\n SpeakerBio:A
llison Young \, Digital Forensics Analyst at The Legal Aid\n Society\n
Allison Young is an Analyst in the Digital Forensics Unit of the Legal\n
Aid Society. Allison has expertise in computer\, mobile\, and cloud\n
account preservation and analysis. She is a current Cellebrite\n Certifi
ed Mobile Examiner and holds a Master's degree in Digital\n Forensics fr
om the University of Central Florida. She has examined\n hundreds of com
puters and cell phones during her career and has a\n love-hate relations
hip with data\n\n Allison has used her knowledge of "how computers think
" to help\n attorneys understand the importance of their digital evidenc
e so they\n can better serve their clients\, sometimes resulting in redu
ced\,\n settled\, or dismissed outcomes in legal cases. She likes to bri
dge the\n gap between what the database says and what may have happened
IRL - or\n point out when crossing that bridge won't necessarily bring u
 s to the\n truth.\n\n\n SpeakerBio:Diane Akerman \, Digital Forensics
Attorney at The Legal Aid\n Society\n Diane Akerman is a public defend
er working in the Legal Aid Society's\n Digital Forensics Unit (DFU). Th
e Digital Forensics Unit is dedicated\n to fighting the unregulated and
unfettered use of surveillance\n technology primarily by the NYPD. Her w
ork involves investigating and\n uncovering the purchase and use of tech
nologies\, developing litigation\n strategies in criminal cases\, and ad
vocating for policy changes. She\n has litigated the full array of elect
ronic surveillance technologies\n employed by the NYPD and local law enf
 orcement\, including cell phone\n tracking\, GPS\, ShotSpotter and facia
l recognition technology. She\n knows what it's like to get that email f
rom Facebook informing you\n that they are about to give the federal gov
ernment all your data\, and\n to have her cell phone a mere Judge's sign
 ature away from a Cellebrite\n machine.\n Twitter: [2]@MF_Diz\n\n De
scription:\n Dobbs has significantly heightened the fear that everyday p
rivate data\n can be leveraged by law enforcement to prosecute pregnancy
outcomes.\n However\, this data is already being used in investigating
other\n criminalized activities. In this talk\, we will show you example
s of\n information that can easily be extracted from many phones to surv
eil\n personal reproductive decisions.\n\n We will also show you how t
he government obtains your not-so-private\n thoughts using forensic extr
action and reporting tools\, with a focus\n on health and lifestyle apps
. This will include a review of the output\n of common forensic tools\,
demonstrating both the practical ease of\n reviewing sensitive data and
the technical limitations of interpreting\n their meaning. Warning: you
may find this peek into digital\n investigations disturbing.\n\n We wi
ll discuss the different laws that do\, or do not\, protect your\n priva
te health data\, but will focus primarily on the limitations of\n the 4t
h Amendment in the digital world. The talk will provide a brief\n overvi
ew of traditional warrant practice and the "reasonable\n expectation of
privacy" in digital data. But because the law has no\n bearing on realit
y\, we'll look at excerpts from search warrants for\n digital devices an
d cloud data that illustrate the flawed nature of\n warrant practice in
general\, the limitations of the practice in the\n digital context\, and
the ease with which the government can obtain\n your data without any r
 eal oversight.\n\n Bibliography & References:\n\n * United States v.
