DESCRIPTION: 'Title: 'Damn the exploits! Full speed ahead!' How naval fle
 et tactics\n redefine cyber operations\n When: Friday\, Aug 12\, 11:30
  - 12:15 PDT\n Where: Flamingo - Sunset-Scenic Ballroom (Adversary Villa
 ge) - [1]Map\n\n SpeakerBio:Christopher Cottrell \, Threat Operations Le
ader\n Christopher Cottrell is a Threat Operations leader at Nvidia. By\
n failing upwards into management after 10 years of being a red team\n
operator for the government\, he focuses on strategy\, tactics\, and\n
philosophy the same way he applied himself to being a tactical\n operato
 r. By taking a step back from the keyboard\, he has discovered\n pitfall
s that cyber teams are heading towards and is working on\n strategies to
help the community avoid them. Christopher enjoys\n helping inspire oth
ers to be their best selves through writing papers\n on cyber philosophy
\, or by creating programs to give opportunities to\n break into cyber.
He presented the red team development program at DEF\n CON 28 in the Red
Team Village\, titled ""Guerilla Red Team:\n Decentralize the Adversary
""\, and served on a joint panel at DEF CON\n 29 between the Red Team Vi
llage and the AI Village discussing the\n evolution of offensive securit
y as AI/ML becomes more prevalent in the\n threat landscape. Christopher
has published quality of life tools for\n Cobalt Strike (Deckbuilder\,
Quickrundown) and C2 tools for securely\n exfiling secret keys (Catcher)
. However his proudest achievement is\n serving daily as a husband and f
ather to people who will forever be\n greater than himself.\n\n Descri
ption:\n The Naval Fleet: a symphony of specialized assets working toget
her to\n complete a goal. Fleet doctrine and tactics were upended in the
early\n 1900s when two new classes of ships were introduced: the carrie
r and\n the submarine. Looking at the past 20 years of cyber doctrine\,
new\n classes of capabilities were introduced: the red team and the hunt
\n team. But unlike modern fleets\, cyber teams are not properly\n inc
orporating these new assets to great effect\, squandering the\n potentia
l of the capability. The assets are leashed when they should\n be unleas
hed. By studying the unique capabilities of ships in a fleet\n and pairi
ng them with a cyber discipline\, we unlock countless real\n world examp
les of naval warfare tactics\, battles\, and strategy that\n can be appl
ied to cyber and freeing the true potential of each cyber\n element. Lik
e the critical evolution of the modern fleet from\n Battleship centric t
o Carrier centric\, modern cyber teams are past due\n to make the same e
 volution from SOC centric\, to Hunt centric.\n '\n\n 1. https://defcon
