er survivor\, co-founding member of\n The Light Collective. As a patient
advocate with 15 years experience\n working in the breast cancer commun

nsure technologies affecting the\n lives of her community have represent
ation from people of color in the\n governance and design.\n\n Descrip
tion:\n Whether serving up medical misinformation through ads\, or broke
ring\n patients into predatory startups like Cerebral - patients going\n
through the trauma of a diagnosis experience harm as they seek\n know
ledge online. This talk will focus on this specific research\, and\n sha
re a broader perspective on the deadly state of surveillance\n capitalis
m and ad targeting in healthcare.\n\n In a recent study from researchers
at Duke University and the patient\n privacy-focused group the Light Co
llective\, patient advocates who are\n active in the hereditary cancer c
ommunity and cancer support groups on\n Facebook—including three who a
re Facebook group admins—downloaded\n and analyzed their data from the
platform's "Off Facebook Activity"\n feature in September and October.
The tool shows what information\n third parties are sharing with Faceboo
k and its parent company Meta\n about your activity on other apps and we
bsites. Along with the retail\n and media sites that typically show up i
 n these reports\, the\n researchers found that several genetic-testing a
nd digital-medicine\n companies had shared customer information with the
social media giant\n for ad targeting.\n\n This talk will not only sh
are examples of harm\, we will talk about\n what our patient-led collect
ive is doing to help patients take back\n their privacy.\n\n '\n\n 1
