  the University of Maryland. His research focuses on\n   cybersecurity\, i
 nternational security\, terrorism\, and the intersection\n   of those topi
 cs. His expertise includes multi-domain influence and\n   critical infrast
 ructure attack operations\; and Chinese and North\n   Korean cyber operati
 ons.\n\n   Description:\n   Data deficits and data voids — sometimes ref
 erred to as data deserts\n   — describe situations in which the demand f
 or information about an\n   event or issue far exceeds the supply of credi
 ble information\,\n   resulting in an information landscape that is ripe f
 or exploitation by\n   bad actors. These types of information vacuums are 
 particularly common\n   during times of crisis\, such as the coronavirus p
 andemic\, when access\n   to and discoverability of credible information c
 ould mean the\n   difference between life and death. In this presentation\
 , we will\n   discuss our research exploring the information environment s
 urrounding\n   COVID-19 vaccination\, focusing on how data deficits and vo
 ids created\n   an opening for mis- and disinformation to proliferate. We 
 will\n   describe the conditions under which these information vacuums for
 m\, as\n   well as the tactics used to exploit them\, with a particular em
 phasis\n   on vulnerabilities in the information environment outside of th
 e U.S.\n   and in non-English language communities. Specifically\, we focu
 sed on\n   the anti-vaccination narratives in Central Asia. The region pro
 vides a\n   distinct avenue to explore data voids and the disinformation l
 andscape\n   given the dearth of English in the media landscape\; extensiv
 e Russian\n   and Chinese geopolitical\, socio-linguistic\, and economic i
 nfluences\;\n   and scant mis- and disinformation research or investigativ
