DESCRIPTION: 'Title: Exploring Unprecedented Avenues for Data Harvesting
 in the\n Metaverse\n When: Saturday\, Aug 13\, 13:45 - 14:30 PDT\n W
here: Flamingo - Sunset-Vista Ballroom (Crypto Privacy Village) - [1]Map\n
    Speakers:Gonzalo Munilla Garrido\,Vivek Nair\n\n SpeakerBio:Gonzalo M
unilla Garrido\n Gonzalo Munilla Garrido is a privacy researcher at the
BMW Group and\n Ph.D. Student at TU Munich\, where he researches privacy
-enhancing\n technologies. His main research interests are in differenti
al privacy\n and probability theory. Gonzalo has previously been recogni
zed as\n OpenMined's "contributor of the month" and has appeared in Goog
le's\n "Awakening" magazine. He contributes to the security & privacy\n
community by participating as a mentor and judge in hackathons\,\n pub
lishing code tutorials about differential privacy\, and teaching the\n B
lockchain Engineering course at TUM.\n\n SpeakerBio:Vivek Nair\n Vivek
Nair is an EECS Ph.D. student at UC Berkeley and a researcher at\n Corn
 ell's IC3. As a recipient of the NSF\, NPSC\, and Hertz fellowships\,\n
Vivek has worked with the US Department of Defense to build resilient\n
cyber systems. He began researching cybersecurity in 2015\, when he\n fo
unded Multifactor.com\, and has gone on to author 12+ patents for\n cybe
rsecurity technologies. He was the youngest-ever recipient of\n Bachelor
's and Master's degrees in Computer Science at the University\n of Illin
ois at the ages of 18 and 19 respectively. Outside of\n cybersecurity\,
Vivek is a competitive VR eSports player and the\n captain of UC Berkele
y’s Beat Saber team\, which he led to a US\n collegiate championship v
ictory in 2021.\n\n Description:\n A virtual reality (VR) user thought
they were joining an anonymous\n server in the popular "VR Chat" applic
ation. Behind the scenes\,\n however\, an adversarial program had accura
tely inferred over 25 of\n their personal data attributes\, from anthrop
ometrics like height and\n wingspan to demographics like age and gender\
, within just a few\n minutes of them joining. As notoriously data-hungr
y companies become\n increasingly involved in VR development\, this scen
ario may soon\n represent a typical VR user experience. While virtual te
lepresence\n applications (and the so-called "metaverse") have recently
received\n increased attention and investment from major tech firms\, th
 ese\n environments remain relatively under-studied from a security and\n
privacy standpoint. In this talk\, we'll illustrate via a real-time\n
VR/XR demo how an attacker can covertly harvest personal attributes\n f
rom seemingly-anonymous users of innocent-looking VR games. These\n atta
ckers can be as simple as other VR users without special\n privilege\, a
nd the potential scale and scope of this data collection\n far exceed wh
at is feasible within traditional mobile and web\n applications. We aim
to shed light on the unique privacy risks that\n the metaverse entails a
nd contribute a new way of thinking about\n security and privacy in emer
 ging AR/VR environments.\n '\n\n 1. https://defcon.outel.org/consolida
