He is also a co-founder of DC702 and enjoys training new\n stu dents on an eclectic array of subjects surrounding his interests.\n\n De scription:\n Breaking into the capture the flag (CTF) world can be daunt ing. With\n much of the world going virtual\, many companies\, organizat ions\, and\n individuals are sponsoring capture the flag competitions an d people\n are using these types of events\, or various hacking platform s (e.g.\,\n Offensive Security's Proving Grounds or Hack The Box)\, to l earn and\n practice new skills. Unfortunately\, many feel overwhelmed wh en faced\n with these challenges or don't know where to start. This work shop will\n introduce the basics of CTFs and provide resources\, tips\, and\n fundamental skills that can be helpful when getting started.\n\n This workshop will start with an overview of the CTF landscape\, why we\n do them\, and what value they have in the scope of the hacking\n comm unity. This workshop will include various resources\, a couple\n walkthr oughs to show how to approach CTFs\, and how it may differ from\n "real world" hacking challenges. Next\, a short CTF will be hosted to\n give a ttendees hands-on experience solving challenges while being able\n to as k for help to successfully navigate the challenges. By the end of\n the workshop\, the group will have worked through various types of CTF\n cha llenges\, and have the confidence to participate in other CTFs\n hosted throughout the year.\n\n Areas of focus will include:\n * Common platf orms and formats\n * Overview of online resources\n * Common tools use d in CTFs and hacking challenges * Basics of web\n challenges\n * Basi cs of binary exploitation and reversing challenges * Basics of\n cryptog raphic challenges\n * Basics of forensic and network traffic challenges * Some ways of\n preparing for your next CTF / Hacking challenge\n\n M aterials\n Laptop Debian-based Virtual Machine (e.g.\, Kali) is re commended\,\n and USB install drives will be available Virtualized environment\n or Kali is not required but Kali will provide all t he tools\n useful in solving the challenges and help standardize a vailable\n tools.
