DESCRIPTION: 'Title: Socially Engineering the Social Engineers: Understan
ding\n Phishing Threats by Engaging with Actors\n When: Friday\, Aug 1
 2\, 17:30 - 17:59 PDT\n Where: LINQ - 3rd flr - Social A (Social Enginee
 ring Community) - [1]Map\n\n SpeakerBio:Crane Hassold\n Crane Hassold
has worked in the social engineering and behavioral\n analysis space for
more than 16 years. He is currently the Director of\n Threat Intelligen
ce at Abnormal Security\, where he leads a team\n responsible for resear
ching enterprise-focused cyber threats\,\n particularly business email c
ompromise (BEC) and credential phishing\n attacks. Prior to moving to th
e private sector in 2015\, Crane served\n as an Analyst at the FBI for m
ore than 11 years\, spending most of his\n career in the Behavioral Anal
ysis Units\, providing support to\n intelligence community and law enfor
cement partners against national\n security adversaries and serial viole
nt criminals. In 2012\, Crane\n helped create the FBI’s Cyber Behavior
al Analysis Center\, which\n combines the traditional behavioral concept
s used for decades in the\n violent crime world with technical expertise
to gain a holistic\n understanding of cyber adversary TTPs.\n\n Descr
iption:\n Too often\, our understanding of cyber threats is limited to p
assive\n observation of the threat as it comes into an environment. In e
ssence\,\n the only intelligence that can be gleaned from this type of p
assive\n collection is simply what the adversary reveals in the initial
phase\n of an attack and we are blind to the rest of the attack cycle. T
his\n presentation will cover how today’s phishing attacks present us
with\n an opportunity to better understand the full cycle of a cyber att
ack\n by engaging with an attacker to collect intelligence to reveal wha
t\n happens AFTER a potential attack is successful. We’ll start by\n
talking about the concept of active defense\, which helps answer the\n
question\, “And then what?” that we aren’t able to answer using\n
normal passive intelligence collection. We’ll discuss why these\n tact
ics work so well and how the same behavioral exploits scammers use\n to
con victims can also be used to better understand their attacks.\n We’
ll end by looking at some examples of successful active defense\n engage
ments\, including an engagement with a ransomware actor that used\n mult
iple communication platforms and will include some clips of\n conversati
ons with the actor where we’ll learn more about his\n background and m
 otivations.\n '\n\n 1. https://defcon.outel.org/consolidated_page.html
