Fathom5 will be hosting a number of Grace Maritime Cyber Testbed\n conso
les at the ICS Village to support the SeaTF activity. This\n "lunchtime
tutorial" will discuss the protocols associated with the\n Automatic Ide
ntification System (AIS)\, the widely-used maritime\n situational awaren
ess system and part of the Grace Navigation console.\n This mini-tutoria
l will describe the AIS protocol and transmission\n format used between
 vessels using radio transmission.\n\n SpeakerBio:Tyson B. Meadors \, Cyb
er Warfare Engineer\n LCDR Tyson B. Meadors is a Navy Cyber Warfare Engi
neer currently\n assigned to Cryptologic Warfare Activity SIXTY SEVEN. H

professor of security studies\n at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
and serves as a nonresident\n senior fellow for Joint Special Operations
University. Prior to\n Embry-Riddle\, Diane was a visiting assistant pr
ofessor at John Cabot\n University in Rome\, Italy. She writes and does

nt of State and the\n U.S. Department of Defense. She is a graduate of
the U.S. Air Force\n Academy\, the Naval Postgraduate School\, and Geor
ge Mason University.\n\n Description:\n Maritime transit relies on the
set of global navigation satellite\n systems (GNSS)\; the position\, na
vigation\, and timing (PNT) systems\n they enable are crucial for traver
sing narrow straits and littoral\n waters. GNSS also facilitates the Aut
omatic Identification System\n (AIS) for situational awareness\; AIS tra
cings also provide the log of\n a ship’s movement. The Global Position
ing System (GPS) and AIS\n contain a host of vulnerabilities\, however\,
and vessels around the\n world\, from the Black Sea to the Port of Shan
ghai\, have been spoofed.\n Both AIS and GPS spoofing have escalated in
their seriousness in the\n last five year\, to the point where spoofing
has become weaponized.\n These disruptions are provocative\; adversary n
ations can create false\n AIS tracks to support virulent narratives\, co
untering the interests of\n U.S. and our allies. Because of grave danger
these threats entail\, it\n is essential that policymakers and maritime
operators understand the\n risks\, mitigation techniques\, and implicat
 ions of GPS and AIS\n spoofing.\n '\n\n 1. https://defcon.outel.org/
