  Cow\n   John Midgley was born and raised in Toronto\, Canada. He studied\
 n   computer science at the University of Toronto where he earned a B.Sc.\
 n   and a Masters in Computer Vision. His first job out of school was\n   
 building the search algorithms for openCola\, an early peer to peer\n   co
 llaboration tool that was arguably 20 years ahead of its time. Not\n   bei
 ng able to afford a time machine\, he busied himself by working at a\n   s
 tring of startups and then a couple larger companies (Microsoft and\n   Ne
 tflix). From 2011 to 2021 he worked at Netflix on Facebook\n   integration
 \, search\, video ranking\, content promotion and ended up\n   managing th
 e personalization organization\, responsible for the systems\n   and algor
 ithms that construct the Netflix experience. Now that it’s\n   20 years 
 later\, the world may finally be ready for a new and improved\n   version 
 of OpenCola.\n\n   Description:\n   The internet\, as it stands today\, is
  not a very trustworthy\n   environment\, as evidenced by the numerous hea
 dlines of companies\n   abusing personal data and activity. This is not re
 ally surprising\n   since companies are responsible for optimizing revenue
 \, which is often\n   at odds with user benefit. The result of these incen
 tives has produced\n   or exacerbated significant problems: tech silos\, m
 isinformation\,\n   privacy abuse\, concentration of wealth\, the attentio
 n economy\, etc. We\n   built OpenCola\, free and open source\, as an alte
 rnative to existing\n   big-tech applications. It puts users in control of
  their personal\n   activity and the algorithms that shape the flow of dat
 a to them. We\n   believe that this solution\, although simple\, can signi
 ficantly\n   mitigate the challenges facing the Internet.\n   '\n\n   1. h
