Quantum computers pose a grave threat to the public-key cryptography\n
we use today. Many quantum-safe alternatives have been proposed to\n al
leviate this problem. None of these\, however\, provide a perfect\n repl
acement for our conventional algorithms. Indeed\, they either\n result i
n increased bandwidth\, bigger keys\, and/or slower runtime\,\n thus gre
atly impacting their integration into crypto applications.\n\n In this t
alk\, I’ll give an overview of the emerging post-quantum\n cryptography
(PQC) schemes. I’ll then present the lessons we have\n learned from our
prototype integrations into real-life protocols and\n applications (such
as TLS\, SSH\, and VPN)\, and our experiments on a\n variety of devices
\, ranging from IoT devices\, to cloud servers\, to\n HSMs. I’ll discuss
the Open Quantum Safe project for PQC development\,\n and related open-
source forks of OpenSSL\, OpenSSH\, and OpenVPN that\n can be used to ex
periment with PQC today. I’ll present a demo of a\n full (key exchange +
authentication) PQC TLS 1.3 connection.\n\n This work sheds lights on t
he practicality of PQC\, encouraging early\n adoption and experimentatio
n by the security community.\n\n Bio\n -----------------\n I am a cr
ypto specialist in MSR’s Security and Cryptography team [1].\n I’m curre
ntly involved in projects related to post-quantum\n cryptography\, such
as the Open Quantum Safe project [2]\, and leading\n the development of
the U-Prove technology [3]. I’m also interested in\n privacy-enhancing t
echnologies\, smart cloud encryption (e.g.\,\n searchable and homomorphi
c encryption)\, and the intersection of AI and\n security.\n\n Prior t
o joining Microsoft in 2008\, I was the Chief Security Engineer\n at Cre
dentica\, a crypto developer at Silanis Technology working on\n digital
signature systems\, and a security engineer at Zero-Knowledge\n Systems
